Let us paddle the canoe in unison,
lest we are swamped by the waves.

About Us

The Environmental White Water Park Trust (EWWPT) is the brainchild behind the Mangahao National White Water Park, located

Their Vision...

  • A white water reserve for slalom, down river racing and freestyle kayaking to an international standard;
  • Exposure to the many disciplines of kayak sport, for the youth of New Zealand in the hope of attracting them to participate in any of its possibilities. Also providing a spectator possibility for those just wanting to watch;
  • World Class out of season training for European and North American paddlers in any of the variations of paddle sport;
  • To offer both on and off river facilities/features, which would enable the promotion of tourism and outdoor recreation in the area. This would be in the form of rafting, fun kayaking and native New Zealand bush adventures;
  • To create a reserve that allows for the general population to have safe recreation in the form of swimming, camping, BBQ and other outdoor activities.
  • To have a safe environment for young adults to stay and be educated in New Zealand flora, fauna, geography, geology, hydrology, meteorology, astrology and water safety;
  • To be a home to the New Zealand Centre of Excellence for all kayak disciplines and as such provide a Coaching role;
  • To develop a Tourism and regional promotions strategy, selling the site’s possibility to both the national and international tourist.”

The Outcome...

The EWWPT project has transformed the area of the Mangahao Power Station at Shannon into a community based nature reserve, world class kayaking facility and tourist attraction.

The 300 metre section of river immediately below the power station has been extensively modified so that river hydraulics form features perfect for slalom, freestyle & recreational white water paddling.

The river bank has been developed into a native reserve complete with plants, birds and snails. A safe, accessible and scenic riverside walkway has been constructed to take you and your family around the park and along the way, offers you a number of picturesque picnic spots to enjoy.

The EWWPT is a non-profit organisation. All races fees and other revenue are used to maintain and improve the park.
